Definition-of-history

Let's see what the definition of history is. We often come across many questions related to the past. We also think about events that happened a long time ago. People are curious about the progress humans have achieved. The subject which deals with all such questions and curiosities is history. History is one of the main subjects of social sciences. History is not just a description of what happened in the past. There are many dimensions and aspects through which we can learn about our past. History includes all such dimensions and aspects.

History unfolds all the events that were very important for humankind. We often make the mistake of considering history merely subject to political events. But History can be about many other aspects of human society. History includes all the political, social, economic, and cultural events. History focuses on events that gave a new direction to human life. Events that were responsible for the emergence of new ideas are the main focus of history. We learn about important events and revolutions which gave new ideas to the world throughout history.                 We learn about the political systems of the past and also about political changes in the past. History is written from various perspectives. When we read history, we need to keep in mind the perspective through which it is written.

Definition of history

History has many definitions that are given by various thinkers all over the world. According to the Greek historian Herodotus, history is a search for past events that were important and unforgettable. Sir John silly defined history as the politics of the past. Arnold Toynbee defined history as the rise and fall of cultures. Karl Marx defined history as a story of wars between classes of society. E.H. Carr defined history as a never-ending dialogue between the present and the past. Lord Acton said that history is a story of the liberation of man.
The broad definition of history should be inclusive of all aspects of life. Hence history can be defined as the progress of human life up to the present.

Importance of history

Most people argue that the study of history is not as relevant to life as much as medicine and engineering. History, however, holds its importance in various professions, which is not easily recognizable as other subjects. The importance of history in professions is not direct and straightforward but very indirect, varied, and complex.

History is important for the development of good citizens. Various governments all over the world think that the study of history imparts patriotism to students. Certainly, the study of history helps us to become more patriotic, but this kind of use of history is a very narrow-minded one. we must not look towards history with the perspective, through which we look at many subjects which help us to satisfy our materialistic needs.

Benefits of studying history

The use and importance of history are beyond such a narrow perspective. History helps to build our own identity and the perspective through which we look at our ancestry. The study of history also helps us in our personal life in various ways. A student of history learns many skills such as the ability to analyze, past and present events and situations.

A careful study of history helps us to come up with very important conclusions that will be helpful in the future. In history, we study many great leaders, thinkers, activists, and rulers. By studying them, we learn how to deal with various complex situations of life. These situations may be political, social, and economic.

To understand society and human behavior, it is not always possible to do experiments, as in the case of natural sciences. History works as an experimental laboratory for understanding human society. Various types of data and information from historical events help to analyze many situations of life in the present.

To understand how society and human behavior change, we must take the help of history. The study of history imparts to us many skills such as the ability to assess change, assess evidence, and understand various conflicting views and perspectives of people.

More about history

Adjusting the whole past into a specific timeframe is an important part of history. Even though history is related to many aspects of life, we can also study history related to specific things . e.g. history of clothes, history of cricket, etc. History is not just about digging the graves, it is about the search of past events in the context of the present. To understand the present situation we need a clear understanding of the past and history helps us in this matter.

When we want to know about the progress of human beings, we must know about past events and processes to accurately understand the progress. Many thinkers give importance to various parts of life. Some historians consider economic activities as the most important. Some prefer political events and some give more importance to ideology and culture. History takes into account all such aspects of life.

While studying history, our focus should not be just on remembering dates but should be on understanding the reasons and consequences of all historical events. Studying history with interest is always going to help us to stay ahead in our life.
